Antrim Springtime

Antrim Castle Gardens is an historical gem. The 400 year old gardens are unique in Northern Ireland. A recent £6m restoration project supported by Heritage Lottery Fund has now preserved this historic site for generations to come.

Pass through the Barbican Gate (1818), a portion of the old castle walls, and the underpass beyond to reach Antrim Castle Gardens. The castle burned down many years ago, but the grounds remain as one of the few surviving examples of a 17th-century ornamental garden. Clotworthy House, the castle’s former coach house and stable block, now houses an exhibition on the history of the castle and gardens as well as a cafe and gift shop.

It was essential to capture such an historic site at its best, helping to promote this wonderful place to one of Northern Irelands best tourist attractions.

Giants Causeway &

The Dark Hedges- Game of Thrones Movie Site

There is much lore that surrounds the history of Giant’s Causeway and it’s creation. While science has proven that these rocks were formed during a volcanic explosion and years of waves crashing against them, the locals have a different theory. There is local lore that tells the tale of the giant, Fin MacCool, who built a bridge between Ireland and Scotland to confront his archrival, Benandonner.

Game of Thrones is a hot item these days and that was apparent as we rolled up the country back roads towards the infamous Dark Hedges. The hedges themselves are instantly stunning with their contrast to the green fields around them but it is hard to not be distracted by the troves of people walking down the road. Wandering down between the towering trees left me imagining what it would be like to visit this place when nobody else was there.

The trees really are stunning and it’s easy to see why they used this site for the Game of Thrones set. The trees themselves transport you back in time and the estate that they lead to sets up the perfect atmosphere for a visit. Remember to enjoy the visit, linger a while in the back of the crowd and just enjoy your chase to witness such a site.

Fanad Head Lighthouse

Standing between idyllic Lough Swilly and sandy Mulroy Bay, Fanad Head Lighthouse has been voted one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world.

With its location in the Donegal Gaeltacht (an Irish speaking area) on the eastern shore of windswept Fanad Peninsula simply exquisite, it’s little wonder that this lighthouse is a Wild Atlantic Way highlight.

Fanad Head Lighthouse is classified as a sea light, not a harbour light, despite it marking the entrance into Lough Swilly which is a natural harbour of refuge.

It is one of 70 lighthouses operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights around the coast of Ireland and continues to provide a vital role in maritime safety today.
